Travel Tip Of The Day – Travel Light!

Guest Post February 11, 2010 Before You Leave, Travel Advice 12 Comments

Whether you’re backpacking, doing a road trip, staying in hotels, long journey or short, from my experience of travelling over the years, the best advice I can give is be prepared, but travel *light*!

You’ll be surprised as to how little you actually *need* when travelling. I know Nathan did half a year around the world using a single medium sized backpack – not a tramping pack, just a normal backpack of about 15 – 20 litres (was that about right Nathan?)  Of course if you’re travelling in Winter you’ll need a bit more in the way of warm clothing, but still, I’m sure one backpack would do the job.

So when I started putting my kit together for this trip, I was happy to know that everything I needed and wanted to take with me could fit into the backpack you see here in the picture! The other bag is a trumpet case – not a necessary item, but I wanted to do some practise on the road.

And one of the biggest benefits of travelling light? No checked luggage!! Whilst the other travellers were still waiting for their 20kg backpacks and suitcases to appear on the airport baggage claim, I had alreadycleared customs and was out of the airport So, the weight of my backpack was 7.2 kgs before leaving Stockholm – but that included a bit of extra food for the stopovers at the various airports – saving a *lot* of money!  The reactions from the check-in clerks is pretty funny though when they see the destination of my flight (over 20,000km from the point of origin) and my answer to their question of “How many checked bags do you have, sir?” is “None” Travel Tip Of The Day – Travel Light! rtw travel advice before you leave world nomads Winter warm clothing trip travelling light travel tip of the day travel light travel suitcases Stockholm road point of origin nomadic matt nathan sofia travel site Nathan long journey lonely planet kgs journey experience everything bit baggage claim backpack airport baggage airport advice

Its a great tip to pack light. Many items can be bought locally if/when needed. It’s not like the rest of the world doesn’t need the same sort of things you do now is it.

Haha exactly. When we went backpacking first time I brought an 60 litre backpack filled to the brim with stuff I thought was necessary.
Less than a month later my backpack had shrunken to 1/4 of the size, and Nathan had gone from a 90 litre backpack to a daypack the size of a normal schoolbag. We realized how much we actually needed… :)

I am interested to know what the essentials were that were in the backpack, I am going around the world later this year and I am appreciating this advice – just want even more specifics as I didn’t think it was possible to travel THAT light. Thanks.
