Travel Dreams Vs Travel Plans - Which Are More Important?

Sofia December 31, 2010 Before You Leave, Travel Advice 37 Comments

I was talking to a friend the other day about traveling, I was sharing my big travel plans and she was sharing her dream travels.

We were talking about the same thing, only I called it a plan while she called it a dream.

Travel Dreams Vs Travel Plans Which Are More Important? rtw travel advice before you leave travel plans travel dreams rtw travel risk pink cloud perspective few words failure dreams blogsherpa 2011 travel plans It’s only a word, but there is a lot lying behind it - I believe that by thinking of your travels as dreams, it will take you so much longer until they become a reality.

A dream doesn’t provoke you to take action, it just lies there on a pink cloud in your head. A dream is just a place you sometimes escape to when life gets too dull and you need that escape.

We all have dreams, but few of us ever get to see them come true.

I think a lot has to do with the way we look at things – our perspective. If we accept to leave plans as dreams we won’t even try to make an effort to achieve it and turn it into a reality.

A dream is almost something that isn’t supposed to come true, because, well – it’s a dream!

Travel Dreams Vs Travel Plans Which Are More Important? rtw travel advice before you leave travel plans travel dreams rtw travel risk pink cloud perspective few words failure dreams blogsherpa 2011 travel plans Someone once told me that dreams that always came true were no longer dreams.

She said she wanted to keep her dreams as dreams because if they came true she wouldn’t have anything to dream about anymore.

I think that the reason why some of us don’t follow our dreams is because we don’t believe in ourselves enough that we can actually do it, and we are afraid of failure.

You have a choice, and which one you choose depends on what you value the most.

If you take a risk you might fail, but you might also succeed. If you never take a risk, you will never fail, but definitely never succeed either.

I believe that if you just change a few words in your head, and think of your dreams as plans, it’s more likely to happen.

When you have a plan, you have already taken the first step to action.

So what are your PLANS for 2011? Tomorrow is the start of another year, have you taken the time to write down what you would like to achieve?

We would love to hear about your plans for 2011 - whether they are travel-related or not. Share them in the comments below – also, are your plans different from your dreams?

Dreams are always perfect, nothing goes wrong with it. Plan changes but that’s the reality and the fun and experience is something real. Happy New Year, I got to start planning my 2011 :D

      Happy New Year Sarah!
I agree, dreams are perfect, life is not, but how dull would life be if it was all perfect all the time? :)

      Have fun planning your 2011!

      Thanks Glen!
I agree, the feeling of reaching a goal, of making your plans reality, is for me much more wonderful.

Room for both – plans are just dreams that have come to fruition. All my plans and deeds start with a bit of day dreaming.

    • http://108.167.164.229/~wwwaswet Sofia

Very true Deb, every plan starts with a bit of dreaming – just don’t let it end there! ;)

It’s my dream to visit every country in the world, but I plan to visit at least one new country per year. It’s quite unlikely that I’ll achieve my dream, but all of my travel plans take me a step closer to it.

I blogged my 2010 travel summary and my 2011 travel wishlist earlier today: http://alittlecameo.com/2010/12/31/travels-in-2010/

I wish everyone a fabulous year of travel in 2011 with new places, faces and embraces.

Thanks for sharing the article, plans really do take you a step closer to achieving your dreams.

Have an awesome 2011 you too!

Great observation in the difference between the words and what they invoke in us.

My wife and I are planning on going to Siquijor, Philippines in late October-early November of 2011. I haven’t been to Philippines in 4 years now, and I look forward to all of it, the sights, the food, the people…

    • http://108.167.164.229/~wwwaswet Sofia

Sounds like a nice plan, we just did a little planning ourselves. Exhausting when you get to the details, but fun ;)

Very true Sofia, great post. Although travel is a reality for me, there are places that I “dream” of going. I would like to take your advice and turn that into places that I “plan” to go this year! :) Just need to do a bit of budgeting!

    • http://108.167.164.229/~wwwaswet Sofia

      Thanks Annie.
Good luck with budgeting your trip!

Well all I have to say is that my travel DREAM has now become a travel PLAN. I took the plunge bought a one way ticket to San Jose, Costa Rica moved my departure date a few months earlier and am gonna wing it. None of this was part of my original plan but I am so excited. If i don’t make this dream come true… NO ONE WILL!!!

    Great post yall~

    • http://108.167.164.229/~wwwaswet Sofia

That’s great! Sometimes winging it is the best way to go, if you want to go earlier then do it!

Great post! I like to plan instead of dream whenever possible. I still have travel dreams (like finding a job in travel, and seeing some far-off places), but I have more immediate travel plans, too. The plans are what keeps me going; they’re goals that I know I can attain, and working toward them is really rewarding.

My plans for 2011 include going to Hawaii for a week in February, hopefully making it to TBEX in Vancouver in June (I bought the ticket, but have to figure out how to get there!), and then going on a big U.S. road trip with my sister at the end of the summer. I’m really excited about everything!

    • http://108.167.164.229/~wwwaswet Sofia

I feel the same way; plans are what keeps you focused. Hawaii sounds like a nice plan! I’d love to take a road trip through the U.S one day – I mean, I will… ;)

I think like travel plans too instead of travel dreams! … plans to be executed in a wonderful manner !

For 2011, My plan is to travel to at least FIVE countries. I have already booked 3 in SE Asia. I am happy that bloggers like you exist. You give me inspiration and hope and I hope one day my blog will also be an inspiration to others!

    • http://108.167.164.229/~wwwaswet Sofia

      Thank you so much Coco!
Hope you have a great time in SE Asia and tell us all about it on your blog!

      cheers

It’s almost like that old saying “Those who can, do. Those who can’t, teach”. For me it’s all about doing.

Travel wise, this year I’m hoping for a lot of travel come summer time starting with southern europe and lots of sun :)

    • http://108.167.164.229/~wwwaswet Sofia

Sounds nice, where do you plan to start? Greece maybe?

  • http://www.bestparking.com/newark-airport-parking/ John at EWR Parking

There’s nothing wrong with dreaming but would it be better if you have plans to make those dreams come true? Trust me, it will not hurt you :)

Cheers to 2011 and hope that the best of 2010 will be the worst of 2011.

    • http://108.167.164.229/~wwwaswet Sofia

Haha interesting way of putting it, 2010 be the worst of 2011. I sure hope so, cause last year was amazing!

Interesting blog posting, dreams are always wonderful and perfect

  • Rhiannon- Following my Dreams

I am a big believer in making my dreams come true. Follow my heart and my dreams will come true. I told my self when i was 5 years old that i would live in each country in the world for at year. That is not going to happen. it would be a miracle if i lived to 300+. So i have had to adapt my dreams to reality. my dream is now to travel to every country in the world and live in the ones that capture my heart and leave me in awe. My dream is to also freelance as a travel photographer and travel journalist as well as build my business that i started last year, which involves competing in the world body painting championships in Austria.

So here goes… my plan for 2011.
Compete in the world body painting championships (being optimistic i would like to place top 5, preferably 1st) in July. travel other parts of Europe while i am there. Europe may be small, but there is a lot to see and i realize i need to do it in stages. the other countries i have selected include austria, finland, estonia and malta as well as parts the uk. this will be one really expensive trip, good thing i know how to budget :-)

    • http://108.167.164.229/~wwwaswet Sofia

What a detailed dream for a five year old!
Good luck with pursuing your dreams, and with the body painting competition!

Europe has so many different cultures, each country is different from the other, so it would really take a long time to see all of Europe.

Finland was an interesting choice, I’m sure you’ll enjoy it!

  • http://dominicanrepublichotelsandresorts.com Spencer

Its great to dream but much more exciting to actually plan your trip IMO.

    • http://108.167.164.229/~wwwaswet Sofia

I agree, dreaming is great, but planning gives the extra excitement of knowing that you’re making your dream come true!

  • http://twitter.com/gomexicoguide Go Mexico Guide

I tend to be more of a planner than a dreamer myself, but I think it’s really just a matter of how you look at things and what you believe is possible.

Improving my Spanish tops the list for 2011. Happy New Year!

    • http://108.167.164.229/~wwwaswet Sofia

That’s exactly what I think too, a matter of perspective.

      Bbuena suerte! ;)

Two years ago I have this list which you can consider as my travel dreams, it stayed like that for a while until I had the courage to make that life changing decision. And now slowly (but surely) I’m making plans for each one of them. A few has already been crossed off from the list since I’ve decided to go and turn my dreams to reality.

We’ve recently come around to your way of thinking. We used to believe that our dreams were just that – dreams – and that they would always remain on a wish list in the back of our minds, but having experienced all that we have over the last 6 months we realised that dreams really can come true! Now, when we say we really want to do, see or be something, instead of just saying “i wish”, we think about what steps we need to take to achieve it. We never would have thought like this if we hadn’t bitten the bullet, fought our fears and gone travelling. It’s amazing what confidence it can give you – the world really is our oyster!
