There are a ton of things to do in Sydney, for every type of traveler.
Sydney is one of our favorite cities, and every time the place comes up in conversation we say how we wouldn’t mind living there for a while.
What I think is so special about Sydney is it’s friendly atmosphere and location.
It’s a big metropolitan city but doesn’t feel like one at all – it offers several popular swimming and surfing beaches, the city is easily navigated, there are green parks everywhere and the people are mostly… friendly.
Best of all is that you don’t necessarily have to pump out a lot of cash when visiting this city, there are actually quite a few things to do in sydney for free, and also don’t forget you can also save money on Sydney hotels by booking online!
Things To Do In Sydney For Free:
Visit Museums

Sydney has a lot of free museums to visit: Australian National Maritime Museum, Art Gallery of New South Wales (including lots of aboriginal art), the Museum of Contemporary Art (at The Rocks) and Nicholson Museum (in Sydney University, the largest collection of ancient artifacts in Australia).
A visit to a museum is a great way to get more of an understanding about Sydney, its history, culture, and since there are so many to choose from you’ll most likely find one you enjoy.
Since it’s free you don’t have to walk around for hours to feel like you get your money’s worth, but can stop by for a short while on your way somewhere else, although you often end up staying longer than planned..
Music & Concerts
Darling Harbor has a lot of free concerts, and down at Circular Quay there are always many street performers. Martin Place is also a very popular place for buskers.
Free Tour
The Hop On Hop Off tour in Sydney is one of the best bus city tours I’ve been on (it doesn’t cos that much either) – but you can also get a tour around Sydney for free.
A tour is a great way to start your visit in Sydney. This way you get a good overlook and can then decide what you’d like to see more of for the rest of your stay.
The Free Walking Tour Of Sydney works on a tips basis, so it’s up to you how much (or if) you want to pay. Generally, you give them something for their effort.
The 3 hour long tour starts every day at 10.30 am at the anchor in Town Hall Square on George Street, between Sydney Town Hall and St Andrews cathedral. No need for pre booking, you just show up!

Parks and Walks
What’s so great about Sydney is that it’s very walking friendly. There are so many nice alleys, side streets and parks to discover, and you’re never far from a pub or cafe to rest.
Royal Botanic Gardens is a must to visit when in Sydney. It’s a large beautiful park set next to the water. The Gardens cover 30 hectares and everywhere you go you see reminders of the city’s beginnings and the flora and fauna of Australia.
There are some fascinating plants and animals in the gardens, like bats hanging abouts in the tree tops and the fishes who crawl up as babies from the sea and make their way to the pond every year.
Beaches
One of the most popular and unique things to do in Sydney is to relax at some of the beaches around and in the city.
This is really what makes Sydney such a special cosmopolitan city – the golden beautiful beaches and great surfing pretty much in the middle of it all!
My favorite beach is Manly beach, which is often referred to Bondi Beach in the 60′s.
Things To Do For A Small Fee:
$6.40 AUS – Catch A Ferry
Sydney has a beautiful harbor, stunning views and great surrounding islands. Make the most of it by catching a ferry to one of the islands, and enjoy the view on the way. I strongly recommend a visit to Manly beach. The view over Sydney is stunning (you get the best photo ops. of the Sydney Opera house!) and the beach at Manly is awesome.
$25 AUS - Open Air Cinema
If you visit Sydney during the summer season you can not only enjoy the huge (biggest in the world) IMAX theater screen, but they also have an outside cinema in the Royal Botanic Gardens, with a new movie showing every night.
It’s located at Mrs Macquaries Point, with the opera house as a beautiful background setting.

35$ AUS – The Hop-On Hop-Off Tour Bus
Personally taking this bus around Sydney is the BEST way to see everything Sydney has to offer – the pass is also valid for 24hrs. We did this just to see what things there were to do in Sydney, then went back later and spent more time exploring each place.
We hope you liked our list of things to do in Sydney – enjoy your stay!
