Ultimate Train Challenge – What Is It?

A few months ago when we were about to embark on our 30 countries in 90 days Europe Train Challenge – we found out that Michael from GoSeeWrite.com was also planning a fun crazy train challenge – The Ultimate Train Challenge.

So What Is Their Challenge?

Michael has invited a few travel bloggers to join him starting tomorrow (Sep. 1st, 2011) in Portugal, for a one-month train journey that takes them from Portugal all the way to Vietnam.

As they travel from Lisbon, Portugal to Saigon, Vietnam – the group is traveling on the longest existing, continuous stretch of train tracks currently on the planet.

The Rules

The rules are quite simple.  Everyone is free to take whatever route they wish to reach the finish line, and to make it a ‘continuous train journey’, they will need to take at least one train every day.

To make sure that people don’t just pile up easy mileage, they can’t go back into a country once they leave it and they can’t repeat a length of rail (e.g. you can’t take a train back and forth to pile up miles) –  and, obviously, the entire journey has to be completed by train.

The Participants

The participants on the challenge are: Michael Hodson of Go, See, Write, Nora Dunn of The Professional Hobo and Jeannie Mark of Nomadic Chick.

For Charity, Too!

While this adventure seems like a fun romp around the world – these travel bloggers aren’t just doing it for themselves.

The train crew has decided to partner with the Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation to raise funds for a charity near and dear to their hearts: Da Nang Association of Agent Orange Victims.

Competitions And Wrap-Up Party

Just sitting on trains, trying to set a world record would be boring – so a lot of entertaining side competitions and to-do’s have been added.

Scavenger hunts for different things will be a continuous competition where the participants will try to get hold of everything from a hospital gown to a video of them doing vodka shots with Russians on a train.

There will also be fun competitions where the readers can have a say and vote for the best participant in different genres.

And yes, there will be a good wrap up party at the end – everyone reading and following along is invited — according to Michael himself, the first round of drinks are on him. ;)

We look forward to following them, and I’m sure you will as well SO don’t forget to check out all the the crazy Ultimate Train Challenge antics when things get rolling September 1st, and stalk them on Facebook or Twitter!

I’ve been reading ‘The Old Patagonian Express’, a book by Paul Theroux that chronicles his train journey from Boston through the Americas–recommended reading for a journey such as yours. I’m envious; be safe and good luck!

This looks like a lot of fun! Be safe, though.
