That Extra Stuff I Can’t Travel Without

For me, one of the toughest things when backpacking around the world is having to resist the temptation of buying every pretty and new thing I see.

There have been so many things I have wanted to buy, but since I don’t have much space for it in my 40L backpack and honestly the PAIN from having to carry it around outweighs the PLEASURE – I simply promise that I will return one day and buy it.

When you settle down for a while, you really get used to having an abundance of choice to wear ANY clothes, and as much make up and jewelry as you want.

But when out traveling you are really forced to learn how to live with only a few important things.

I’ve done pretty well I think, but there are still a few things that I simply won’t travel without:

1. Hair Ties

I always, ALWAYS have a few of these on my wrist, because even if I don’t need one now, I know that at some point during the day it will come in handy. The worst thing I know is having your hair sticking to your sweaty back…. yuck! Hair ties are also useful for so many other things, it’s amazing how many things you can tie together to save space and when organizing stuff.

2. Ear Rings

I know I don’t need them, but wearing long dangling colorful ear rings is my way of making myself feel extra pretty on those ‘bad’ days.

Also they seem to just make any boring old travel outfit that much nicer!

3. Concealer

Using concealer is pretty much the only make up I wear or take when traveling. It is great to touch up a few random spots etc.

4. A Gift From Home

For me this is about having that little bit of certainty – I like having something from home, a letter from a close friend or something I bring with me which I can look at and feel that warmth and safety, remember that there is always a place I can go back to where people miss me, and feels like home.

5. A Good Face Wash Product

Yes, another face product. But for me the skin is really important, and when traveling you often travel under pressure, stress and in so many different climates.

All of this can cause bad skin, so using a good face wash/soap is a must for me. It’s better to prevent than treat.

6. A Tester Sized Perfume

I don’t use perfume very often when traveling, but I like to have it there in case. Have you ever sniffed that ugly smell only to realize it’s your own shirt that smells? That’s what this is for – a quick spray and the shirt is like new again…! ;)

I know many of these things are very girlie – so today’s post is really for all the girls out there.

I tried to ask Nathan what extra stuff he can’t travel without, but he doesn’t have anything – maybe that is just guys… :p

What are some unnecessary things you can’t travel without? even you guys out there!

Lotion! So your skin can remain normal instead of succombing to the ravages of sun, dirt and cheap soap.

  • http://www.aswetravel.com/ As We Travel

Hey Sabina, thanks for adding a tip! I have yet to find a good lotion for humid places, so if you know a good one tell me! I often use a face sun protection lotion as a normal face lotion in warm and sunny places, but they’re a little greasy :P

Great tips! Love the earrings. As you can see in my gravatar I’m obsessed with big earrings. What is your favorite perfume?

  • http://www.baconismagic.ca Ayngelina

I always buy lotion in the country I’m in, I have dry skin and if it’s a warm place they always have nice cocoa butter or avocado lotion for much less than I would spend in Canada.

  • http://www.aswetravel.com/ As We Travel

Me too! I don’t really have a favorite, I like to try new scents often, which is why I love tester perfumes ;) Right now I have Versace ‘Bright Crystal’, how about you?

  • http://www.aswetravel.com/ As We Travel

Hi Ayngelina! That’s a great advice, to buy in the country you’re in. In Asia I found it difficult finding anything without a “whitening” effect (!), but avocado and coca butter sound really nice :)

I go back and forth between Coco Mademoiselle by Chanel and Butterfly by
Hanae Mori. I try to collect testers as well so that I can try new things
AND they’re perfect to travel with. :)

I carry everything you mention on the list (except a gift which is a good idea). I learned to carry body spray after my first trip to Africa and hair ties are an absolute must for me! I also like to travel with wet wipes which are essential to me.

I can travel without that extra stuff easily… :)

  • Nathan

hehe yeah me too! more of a girl thing i think :p ;)

    An iPod!

Its not that I need all modern electricity when im out traveling, its just that sometimes you just need to be for yourself.

Its easy to bring with you and barely weights anything. Its just such a relief to bring it out whenever waiting for a delayed plane, riding a noisy bus or whatever to just relax in your own world of favourite music!

I always bring pretty earrings too! And oh, an eyelash curler. Haha!

  • http://www.aswetravel.com/ As We Travel

I’ve never tried Hanae Mori, it seems to be my style though, I’ll keep an eye out for it! :)

    • http://www.MyBeautifulAdventures.com/ GlobalButterfly

Oh my gosh, it’s my favorite perfume EVER!!! I would wear it all the
      time, but it’s a little light for fall/winter. Better for spring/summer. :)

You’re so right: travelling without hair ties would be impossible – but I wouldn’t consider them as an unnecessary thing. I don’t take any spare earrings, but the ones in my ears I wear day and night (horrible situation when one gets lost, I feel so naked until I’ve bought a new one).

Another girlie thing: eyeliner and mascara – somehow they make situations easier when I feel insecure…

Quite unnecessary are the ~50 pairs of contact lenses. Actually I could wear my glasses all the time.

Hahaha I’m just trying to pack my backpack and realising that there are way too many things i “can’t” travel without. I still have to learn to leave things at home… Your website is really helpful for that, thanks! :-)

Love your article Sofia! So true! Everything on this list I was nodding my head in agreement! I find it especially hard not to buy cute little dresses (especially here in SEA where everything is so CHEAP!)
I also can’t travel without bobby pins, Vegemite and Mascara (like you said-for those bad days!)

  • http://www.aswetravel.com/ As We Travel

    Hey Sebastian!
Yeah, the iPod can really be your best friend when traveling! I often use mine to fall asleep with. It blocks out noises and it makes me feel so safe and comfortable listening to my favorite music :)

  • http://www.aswetravel.com/ As We Travel

Hey Corinne! Haha it’s funny how you don’t realize how many things you “can’t” travel without until you try to stuff it all into one and the same bag..!

I have no problems leaving without mascara, but I know many people feel naked without it – instead I feel naked without jewelry :P

As much as I think it’s great to keep your “necessities” to a minimum, I really think we have to give ourselves that luxury of bringing things we like for the only reason that we really just like them!

Thanks for sharing the stuff you can’t travel without!

Great post. I agree with all of your choices. My face has begun to freak out from all the changes in water, stress levels, sun, new oils. Ick. Maybe I’ll get a pair of earrings… I like the theme, by the way. Very nice. Suitcase is cute!

    • Sofia

Hi Kim! Oh that happened to me too, it’s very common but it still sucks when it happens!
Thanks! I’m glad you like the theme and logo, I’m really happy with it too :)

I travel with a GPS. I mark my hostel of subway entrance wherever I go and never worry about getting lost.
I never travel without a pack of travel tissues.. Guess why!
I never travel without duct tape to fix things I need like my pack in a pinch.
