Friday Flashback – Escaping To The East Coast Islands Of Malaysia (The Perhentian Islands)

Friday Flashback – Enjoyment And Relaxation In The Perhentian Islands

April 2009: I hadn’t quite been able to make up my mind about Malaysia yet. At first I hated it, then I didn’t know what to think – and then we went to the Perhentian islands on the east coast.

Do I need to say more than – this was the view from our bedroom!

I truly believe that it is humanly impossible not to fall in love with these islands (if you despite this hated them, please comment below and tell me why!), it really is paradise itself.

We were going to stay for only 3 days, but ended up staying for a little more than 2 weeks (16 days!) – after some time in the bustling Kuala Lumpur we needed to escape somewhere quiet for a bit – and this couldn’t have been a better place to end up in.

We didn’t realize how much we needed this until we arrived at the beach.

I really enjoyed the peace and the fact that there was pretty much nothing to do but relaxing, swimming and reading a nice book by the beach. If there would have been a lot of crazy adventure we wouldn’t have been able to stand against the temptation and would have continued to burn ourselves out – this place is the PERFECT stress release and relaxation place!

I guess we weren’t the only couple enjoying the island… ;)

These lizards were MASSIVE by the way – not something you really want to meet in the middle of the night, and then finding out they like to eat anything and everything – scary!

Looks stunning – where did you stay while you were there?

  • Sofia

Yes, one of the most beautiful islands I've ever been to :)

  • Sofia

We stayed at a few places, but the best one by far was Senja Bay Resort on Pualu Kecil island. The picture in the post is the view from our room :)

We loved the islands too – we stayed at the quietest side of the quietest island – Perhentian Besar. We also spent two weeks there and got our advanced diving certificate. We only wore shoes (or sandles) twice – when we walked through the jungle to the other side of the island. I hope it's still as peaceful.

We love, love, loved the Perhentians! We were there back in 2004 and hope to return one day. To this day, we have yet to find a comparable beach setting. We had friends that visited late 2009 and it appears that the secret is now fully out… best place to loose a few weeks!

I went there in 2005 and it was just amazing….but then I went back in 2009 and I was a bit disappointed…..it was still beautiful but nothing compared to 4 years ago…..I recently wrote a post about it….http://marcowho.com/2010/07/the-second-time-is-never-as-good

Cool, what an awesome place to take a diving certificate! We wore sandals when walking through the forest, there were so many giant lizards around, and apparently a huge python snake too…!
It was very peaceful, we really needed that :)

I can't think of any better beaches I've ever been to, they're just amazing..! There weren't many people there at all when we were there, but maybe they were just round the corner :P

  • Sofia

It's a shame that an island can change so much in such a short time. It was amazing when we were there, I can only imagine what it must have been like back in 2004 :)

Haha, what a lovely post! My god, that 1st picture is beyond words gorgeous!!! I'm such a beach addict. It's now on my list of dream destinations. Glad you were able to spend 2 weeks there!
