Indie Travel Podcast has just released a new eBook The Art Of Solo Travel: A Girls’ Guide, written by Stephanie Lee, and we were offered to write a review.
As I’m sure you all know Nathan and I are not Solo Travelers, so at first we were a bit cautious about reviewing such a style of book. But as we read through the 48-page eBook we realized that the tips, tricks and advice Stephanie shares are also applicable to pretty much any kind of traveler – we learnt many great tips!
Our Thoughts
First off we liked the layout of the eBook, it is simple, clean, and spacious which leads to easy reading, including many pictures. The way the book was written was short, sweet and straight to the point – perfect for an eBook, where too much text and not enough space really can be hard on the eyes – this book was perfect for reading straight through and also for going back as a chapter by chapter reference guide – the 2nd time.
Stephanie writes in a personal way, and everything she writes about is backed up with her own personal experiences, which makes you trust that she knows exactly what she’s talking about.
You can tell that Stephanie wrote this book out of pure passion for what she’s doing, and that her main purpose is to share her story and give advice to help you from personal experiences.
She encourages other girls to take that big step and go travel the world alone, to take the chance. She also does it in a way where she doesn’t blind you from the disadvantages, and the bad things which might happen – quite the opposite actually. She talks about this throughout the book, to remind and prepare you for the challenges that solo travel will bring.
Most of the advice she gives can be helpful everywhere in the world, but she refers and gives examples mostly from Europe, which is where she has traveled more. We found that most of what she writes about also work for all type of travelers, and not in particular just for female solo travelers.
She often writes in a ‘pro vs con’ way, which we quite liked, although at times it would have been nice with a longer explanations about certain subjects. It’s a great overall book that touches on many subjects, although some maybe not as thoroughly as I had hoped, but then again you can’t really cover everything in just one book. There were a few things I would have liked her to write a bit more detailed, such as the ‘Don’t Leave Without’ chapter.
We also really loved the parts where she did go in more detail and depth like about couchsurfing, where she had many tips and tricks up her sleeve and it was both fun and interesting to read.
One wish would be that Stephanie had written more about health and safety. This part was only half a page long and written in bullet-point style. A personal story of something that could easily happen and how to avoid it or deal with it the best way, could have suited well here as well as a deeper description of each topic.
That part wasn’t very personal, it felt as she just skimmed through it briefly, while I was left thinking there was a lot more I would have liked to know about health & safety. As I have never traveled alone and think that getting ill even when I have someone (like Nathan) next to me to support and help me out with practical things is difficult, health and safety would be one of my main concerns if I was to decide to travel solo.
Would I Buy This Book?
YES! – if I was a single girl who hadn’t traveled much before, this book would be very helpful. Most of all because it inspires you and pushes you to go out there and do this, alone. To read about someone else who has done this, to know that what you feel is ‘normal’ – it would definitely keep me on track and push me to reach my goals during those times when the doubt starts to creep up – I think it would also be a great book to keep with you as you traveled alone around the world.
